Seminars The Seminars constitute the School’s core activity and are the main tool for spreading of the School’s ideals and values. They are held both at regional and federal levels at locations throughout Russia, as well as abroad at a variety of European and American cities. The Seminar Programme concentrates on two broad topics: firstly, issues of “general principle”, that is the rule of law; human rights; the essentials of civil society and free market economy, and secondly, the practicalities of political life in a democracy. Seminars are designed to encourage independent thinking as well as to foster a democratic view of the world and instill democratic practice.
Speakers at the seminars include leading politicians, members of parliaments, high-ranking officials, successful businessmen, well-known journalists and academics from all over Russia, Europe and the USA. The participants come from all regions of Russia, and also from Armenia, the Baltic states, Belorussia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Mongolia, Serbia, and Ukraine. They include members of the national, regional and municipal legislatures; officials and administrators; journalists; leaders of NGOs, and businessmen.
Each seminar lasts from three to seven days, attended by between 100 and 150 specially selected participants at the average of 35 years of age. The students work extremely hard: daily sessions usually last from 9am to 10pm. Without exception the students report that it is a mind-opening and life-changing experience. In 1993 the School held two seminars. In 2004 it held twenty seminars throughout Russia and western Europe.
